Most dictation apps are tested on native English speakers at a quiet desk and marketed with a words-per-minute number. Most of ahsk's users are not native English speakers, which is why it runs Whisper large-v3, the model that holds up on Indian, Italian, German, Spanish and Nigerian English. And because people who need translation are by definition speaking a second language, translation is a gesture, not a separate app: hold fn + Shift, say it in your language, and the translation is pasted.
Built for your accent, not a wpm chart
A small speech model is fast and cheap and falls apart on non-native English. ahsk uses the large one, in the cloud, and accepts the cost. Your dictionary fixes the words no model gets right, your name and your city among them, and ahsk learns the corrections you make after pasting.
Translate as you speak
Set your second language once. Hold fn + Shift on the Mac, Ctrl + Win + T on Windows, or use the translate gesture on iPhone. Speak in the language you are fluent in; the other one lands at the cursor, formatted for the app you are in. Reply to the client, the landlord, the tax office or the school in their language without opening a translator.

What it is not for
Live interpreting. ahsk translates when you release the key, in about the time a normal dictation takes; it is built for writing, not for a conversation across a table. It also needs an internet connection.

Which accents does it handle well?
We hear the most from Indian, Italian, German, Spanish, French and West African English speakers, and the model was chosen with those in mind. We are publishing a measured comparison against Apple and Windows dictation; until then, the free tier is the test.
Can I dictate in my own language, not English?
Yes. ahsk transcribes any language Whisper understands. Translation is optional; leave it off and your language is typed as spoken.
Is transcription on-device?
No. Audio is transcribed by Whisper large-v3 in the cloud and is not stored. Your dictionary and learned corrections stay on your device. If your work must never leave the machine, ahsk is the wrong tool and we would rather say so than pretend.
