Voice dictation on Mac has come a long way from the stuttering mess of a decade ago. Today, apps like Super Whisper and Wispr Flow promise near-perfect transcription at speeds that make typing feel archaic. But they approach the problem from opposite directions, and that matters more than you might think.

I spent three weeks with both applications, dictating everything from emails to code comments to this very article. Here's what I found.

The Privacy Question

Let's start with the elephant in the room. Super Whisper processes everything locally. Your voice never leaves your machine. For anyone working with sensitive information like lawyers, doctors, or journalists, this is the feature that matters most.

Wispr Flow takes the opposite approach. It sends your audio to the cloud, where sophisticated AI models clean up your speech, remove filler words, and polish the output. The result often reads better than what you actually said. But that convenience comes with a trade-off: your voice data travels through external servers.

Wispr Flow gives you two switches. Its privacy page says a Dictation Cloud Storage setting controls whether transcripts, audio and history are kept on its servers, and a separate setting decides whether your dictation data may be used to train or improve its models. How They Actually Work

Super Whisper is built for users who want control. It can run fully offline using local Whisper models, supports multiple languages with automatic detection, and offers enough configuration options to satisfy any power user. The app lives quietly in your menu bar, activating with a customizable keyboard shortcut.

The downside? All that flexibility creates complexity. Super Whisper isn't hard to use, but it's not exactly plug-and-play either. You'll spend time choosing models, tweaking settings, and learning which configurations work best for your voice and use case. Some users find this empowering. Others find it exhausting.

Wispr Flow prioritizes polish over control. Its AI doesn't just transcribe. It edits. Say "um" fifty times and it'll quietly remove them all. Ramble incoherently and it'll restructure your thoughts into something readable. There's even a whisper mode for dictating in quiet environments without disturbing others.

The app adapts its output style based on context. Dictate in Slack and you get casual. Dictate in Gmail and you get professional. It's clever, sometimes unnervingly so. But it also means you're trusting an AI to interpret what you meant, not just what you said.

Speed and Accuracy

Technical vocabulary is where custom word lists matter. Programming terms, product names and domain jargon are the words any speech model gets wrong first. Both apps now run on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and both have a free plan (checked September 2026). Super Whisper Pro costs $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 once for a lifetime licence; new users get 3,000 words of Pro before falling back to the free plan, which keeps local models. Wispr Flow Pro costs $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly; its free plan allows 2,000 words a week on desktop. If you dictate a lot and want to pay once, Super Whisper's lifetime licence is the cheaper path over time.

Who Should Use What

Choose Super Whisper if privacy is non-negotiable, if you enjoy tweaking settings, if you need offline operation, or if you would rather pay once than subscribe.

Choose Wispr Flow if you want polished output without effort, if you dictate primarily in natural language, and if you're comfortable with cloud processing. The whisper mode is genuinely useful for open offices.

There's a Third Option

Here's what struck me after three weeks: both apps solve voice dictation reasonably well. If you also need translation or a single account across Mac, Windows and iPhone, a third app is worth a look.
