What does Superwhisper do well?

Superwhisper earns its reputation, and anything you switch to should be judged against it. It transcribes offline, so a flight or a locked-down network does not stop it. It runs on Mac, Windows and iOS. Custom modes reshape the output for email, chat or legal writing. You enter names and jargon once in its vocabulary. According to its pricing section, students get 40% off Pro and the yearly plan includes 2 months free.

Why do people look for a Superwhisper alternative?

Most people who leave Superwhisper leave because their needs changed. The threads asking for alternatives come back to four reasons: they want something free and open source, something simpler to set up, better accuracy than a small local model gives them, or translation into a language other than English.

Local or cloud dictation: what is the real trade?

Local transcription keeps audio on your computer and works without a connection. Cloud transcription can run a far larger model than a laptop holds in memory. Nearly every app in this list is built on Whisper, which OpenAI trained on 680,000 hours of audio, according to the Whisper research paper.

The Whisper repository lists the sizes. Tiny has 39 million parameters and needs about 1 GB of memory. Small has 244 million and needs about 2 GB. Large has 1,550 million and needs about 10 GB. A laptop has to pick a smaller model to stay fast, which is why Superwhisper itself suggests cloud models on Intel Macs. Clear speech in a quiet room holds up on a small model. Accents, noise and mixed languages are where size shows.

Translation has a limit of its own. The same repository describes Whisper’s translation task as translation into English. An app that relies on it turns Italian speech into English text. Going from English speech to Italian text needs a separate translation step on top.

Prices, platforms and plan limits come from each vendor’s own website, read on September 13, 2026, and each section links to the page they came from. We did not run an accuracy benchmark across the six apps, so this page makes no accuracy ranking. Superwhisper alternatives at a glance

1. VoiceInk: the closest local match

VoiceInk is the answer for people who like how Superwhisper works and want to pay once. It transcribes on your Mac, and its site states that voice data never leaves the machine. The code is open source on GitHub. A licence costs $25 for one Mac, $39 for two and $49 for three.

The limits are hardware. It needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, so an older Intel Mac is out. There is no Windows version.

Pick it if: you are on a recent Mac, want local transcription, and dislike subscriptions.

2. Handy: free and open source

Handy describes itself as “the free and open source app for speech to text”. You press a shortcut, speak into any text field, and it types. It runs on your own computer.

It is a smaller project funded by sponsors and donations. Expect fewer extras than a paid app: fewer writing modes and less polish around formatting.

Pick it if: cost is the main reason you are leaving and you are comfortable with a community project.

3. MacWhisper: for audio files as well as dictation

MacWhisper started as a way to transcribe recordings locally, and it is still the strongest option here for interviews, lectures and podcasts. The free version includes system-wide dictation. Pro is a €64 licence and adds higher-quality dictation, grammar improvement and dictation with AI prompts.

It is Mac only.

Pick it if: you transcribe files as often as you dictate, and want both in one local app.

4. Wispr Flow: cloud dictation on four platforms

Wispr Flow sends audio to the cloud and cleans up the text as you speak. It is the only app in this comparison with an Android client. The free plan gives 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on iPhone. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, a 20% saving.

Team plans start at $23 per user a month and add single sign-on and HIPAA enforcement, which matters in regulated companies.

Pick it if: you need Android, or your company needs enterprise controls.

5. Willow: cloud dictation with a writing assistant

Willow pairs dictation with Scribe, which turns rough intent into a finished message. The free Basic plan includes a lighter speech model and 20 Scribe uses a week. Pro is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly, and unlocks the stronger model. Business is $35 a month.

Pick it if: you want dictation and an AI drafting tool from one vendor.

6. ahsk: for English as a second language

ahsk is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. It is built for people who write in English all day but think in another language.

Two decisions set it apart. Transcription runs on Whisper large-v3 in the cloud, the largest model in the family, because small local models lose the most on accented speech. And translation is a shortcut: hold fn and Shift on a Mac, or Ctrl, Win and T on Windows, speak Italian, and English lands at the cursor. It works the other way too, into whichever language you choose. A personal dictionary fixes names at decode time and stays on your device. Audio is never stored on our servers.

A monthly price hides the real difference between a licence and a subscription. Over 24 months, the cheapest paid plan on each app works out as follows, using the prices published in September 2026.

The licences win on price by a wide margin. What the subscriptions buy is a larger cloud model, apps on more devices, and features such as translation that a local model on a laptop cannot match.

3. Quit Superwhisper, or change its shortcut, so two apps do not compete for the same key.
4. Recreate your most-used mode, such as a formal email style, as the new app’s mode or instruction.
5. Run the new app on real work for a week before cancelling anything.
